Phthalates

Definition

Chemicals added to PVC to make it soft and squishy. They show up in cheap jelly toys and some older realistic toys, and they are linked to hormone disruption in health research.

Why it matters when you shop

A toy that never lists its material, smells strongly of chemicals, or feels greasy is often softened PVC. 'Phthalate-free' is better than nothing, but it still leaves you with a porous toy. Silicone, glass and steel skip the question entirely.

Toys that show it off

Each one keeps the rank it earned on its own list.
