App-controlled
Also called: Bluetooth toy, smart toy
Definition
A toy that connects to a phone app over Bluetooth, so you or a partner can control it nearby or, with an internet connection, from anywhere.
Why it matters when you shop
Apps add custom patterns, music sync and long-distance play. Read the brand's privacy policy, and check that the toy also works with its own buttons in case the app misbehaves.
Toys that show it off
Each one keeps the rank it earned on its own list.
