Best positions for using a wand vibrator together

A wand is the easiest toy to bring into partnered sex. The trick is picking positions that leave room for the handle.

Reviewed by · Prices checked · How we rank

The verdict

Spooning and on-top positions are the easiest ways to bring a wand into partnered sex, because there is open space in front of the hips. The Magic Wand Rechargeable is our pick for most couples, and a Liberator Wedge under the hips makes missionary work too.

  • Easiest start: spooning, with the wand in your own hand.
  • Best wand for two: Magic Wand Rechargeable.
  • Add a wedge to make missionary roomy.

Try these

The positions

1. Spooning

Lie on your sides, the receiving partner in front. The front partner holds the wand against themselves while the partner behind kisses their neck and sets the pace. Nobody has to reach, and the wand stays exactly where you want it.

2. Pillow-lifted missionary

Slide a wedge under the receiving partner's hips. The lift tilts the pelvis up and opens a little gap between your bodies, just enough for the wand head to rest on top while you move together. Go slow and grind rather than thrust.

3. You on top

Straddle your partner and hold the wand in front of you. You control the depth, the rhythm and the vibration, and your partner gets a very good view. A smaller wand is easier to angle here.

4. From behind

On all fours or lying flat with a pillow under your hips, reach the wand underneath you or let your partner reach around. The flat-lying version is lazier and keeps the wand pinned against the mattress, no hands needed.

5. Edge of the bed

The receiving partner lies back with hips at the edge while the other partner stands or kneels. The open space below the hips gives a long wand handle somewhere to go, and either of you can hold it.

6. Seated face to face

Sit in your partner's lap, facing them, on the bed or a sturdy chair. Hold a compact wand between you, low on your body. It is close, slow and very kissable.

7. Wand on them

Turn the tables: hold the wand against your partner's perineum, the base of the shaft or their inner thighs during oral or hand play. Start on the lowest setting and let them steer you with a hand on yours.

Best wand for two

Magic Wand Rechargeable

from 17 reviews$149.99 to $160.95

The cordless HV-270. Soft silicone head, a handle that looks like a kitchen tool, and a motor you feel in your wrist. If the battery dies you plug it into the wall and keep going.

Pros

  • Rechargeable, or plug it into the wall

Cons

  • Full size. Heavy. Loud on high. Not waterproof
  • Broad head. Skip it if you only want a pinpoint

Why it ranks: Best wand for two: the classic rumble, cordless, and long enough to reach in spooning and edge-of-the-bed positions.

A pearl-white wand with a soft silicone head and a deep, rolling rumble that sinks in instead of skittering across the surface. Ten speeds, twenty patterns, a travel lock, and hours of play on one charge. Press it flat, breathe out, and let it take its time.

Pros

  • Rechargeable

Cons

  • Not waterproof. Keep it out of the bath
  • Full-size and weighty. Not a purse toy

Why it ranks: Quieter, smoother splurge with a slimmer head that slides in easier from behind.

We-Vibe Wand 2

Too new to rate$135.20 to $169

We-Vibe's wand. Smaller than a Magic Wand, app if you want it, quieter than the HV-270. The head is broad enough. The motor is not trying to be a household appliance.

Pros

  • Silicone head
  • Rechargeable handle
  • App optional

Cons

  • You are paying We-Vibe money for less brute force than a Magic Wand
  • App is extra. The buttons work

Why it ranks: Compact, app-capable wand that tucks between two bodies in lap and missionary positions.

The small wand. Still a wand. Broad rumble. Loud. Only for people who want that kitchen-tool motor and don't have thin walls.

Pros

  • Silicone head
  • Rechargeable handle

Cons

  • Not the same brute force as the full-size
  • Still louder than air-pulse

Why it ranks: Smaller and lighter, the easiest wand to angle when you are on top.

Lift for missionary

Liberator Wedge

Too new to rate$108 to $110

High-density foam ramp with a 27-degree incline and removable microfiber cover that holds hips at the right angle without flattening mid-session.

Cons

  • Too big for a nightstand drawer; store it in a closet or at the head of the bed
  • Buy the moisture liner if you use lots of lube

Why it ranks: The helper, not a vibrator: lifts the hips so a wand fits in missionary.

Notes from Bedside CSO (Chief Sex Officer)

Notes from Bedside CSO (Chief Sex Officer)

A wand vibrator delivers broad, steady vibration that many people need to finish, and it plays nicely with a partner once you find a little space between your bodies. The handle is the only real puzzle.

Below are seven positions that make that space easy, each with the toy that helps most, followed by the wands we rank for partnered play.

Buying guide

Which wand for partnered play

A corded or full-size rechargeable wand gives the strongest rumble and reaches easily when you spoon or use the bed edge. A mini wand is easier to tuck between two bodies in missionary or lap positions. Use a water-based lube on silicone heads.

FAQ

Common questions

What is the easiest position to use a wand vibrator with a partner?
Spooning. The front partner holds the wand on themselves while the partner behind sets the pace, so nobody has to reach.
Can you use a wand during missionary?
Yes, with a little lift. A wedge under the hips opens enough space for the wand head, and a grinding rhythm keeps it in place.
